Seriously, I do have that exact same tension I probably want to explore going on - I also "discover" things and names have to be just right and so on, and I definitely have that in common with Tolkien; but at the same time, I'm deeply influenced by the other side and find it very useful and that it often makes sense. Further complicated by the fact that when we were younger, my sister started inventing a language and of course I followed course with my own: and sometimes it was fairly arbitrary and sometimes it was because it could be no other way. (Before you ask, I was very young, so the language never really developed beyond mostly nouns.)
